The Azerbaijan e-visa on a Pakistani passport, and what we do for you

What the Azerbaijan electronic visa actually is, what you have to hand over, what we file on your behalf, and the small mistakes that send an application back.

Baku is the first trip abroad for a lot of people who travel with us, and the visa is the reason. Azerbaijan issues an electronic visa, so for most travellers there is no interview, no embassy queue and no sticker pasted into the passport. That is not the same as saying it is automatic. It is a real application, it is refused if the information is wrong, and it has to line up with the flights and the hotel before you go anywhere.

Here is what is actually involved, and which parts of it are ours rather than yours.

What an electronic visa is

An electronic visa is a permission that exists as a document rather than as a stamp. You apply online, the decision comes back electronically, and what you receive is a page with your details and a number on it. You keep it on your phone and you carry a printed copy, because the airline will want to see it at check-in and you should not be depending on a battery at a counter in Islamabad at four in the morning.

It is not a visa on arrival. You need it before you fly. An airline will refuse to board you without it, and that refusal happens at check-in in Pakistan, not in Baku.

We apply, you do not

On every Baku group departure the visa is inside the package. Our desk prepares and files the application. You do not create an account, you do not fill in the form, and you do not chase the result.

What we need from you is small and specific:

  • Your passport, with enough validity left on it. How much is required depends on the destination, so we confirm the number for your departure rather than quoting a rule of thumb at you. If your passport is close to expiry, renew it before you do anything else, because everything below depends on it.
  • A photograph to the specification we send you. Not a photograph you like. The specification.
  • Your details exactly as they are printed in your passport.

That last one is the whole game, and it is the next section.

The mistakes that send an application back

Almost every problem we see on an electronic visa is a data problem rather than a judgement problem. The system is matching what you typed against what is printed in your passport, and it does not forgive a near miss.

  • Names. Spelling, order, and every part of the name as printed. If your passport shows a middle name, it goes in. If your ticket says something slightly different from your visa, fix it before you fly, not at the airport.
  • Passport number. Read it off the passport, not off an old photocopy or an old booking.
  • Dates. Date of birth in the format the form asks for, and travel dates that match the group you are actually on.
  • A passport that expires too soon. This is the one that costs the most time, because renewal is its own process and it happens before anything else can start.

We check all of this against your passport scan before the file goes in. It is the least glamorous part of the service and it is the part that saves people the most trouble.

What it costs and how long it takes

Both change. Visa fees and processing times are set by the country, they are revised without much notice, and the honest answer is that any number printed on a website is a number that will be wrong eventually.

What we can tell you is the shape of it. There is a standard route and there is a faster route, the faster one costs more, and the difference between them matters only if you are applying late. On a group departure you are not applying late, because we work backwards from the departure date and tell you when we need your documents. When you book, you get the current fee and the current timing in writing, from us, for the departure you are on.

What happens at the airport in Baku

Immigration officers are entitled to ask why you are visiting, where you are staying and how you are funding the trip. On a group departure the answers are already documented: a confirmed hotel, a confirmed return flight, a group manifest and a tour manager travelling with you. Carry your visa printout and your hotel confirmation in your hand luggage rather than in a checked bag.

This is one of the quiet advantages of travelling with a group on a first trip. The questions are the same for everybody. The difference is whether you have the paperwork on you.

The one thing to ask us before you pay

No operator can guarantee a visa, and any operator that tells you otherwise is promising you something they do not control. Missions and immigration systems refuse applications and they are not obliged to explain why.

So before you pay a deposit, ask us in writing what happens to your money if your visa is refused. We would rather you asked that question early than discovered the answer late, and we will put our position in writing for you. We have written about why that question is the one to ask, and what we handle on the visa generally is set out on the visa page.
